Unbreakable bulbs among the new products to be displayed

CHENNAI: Madras Electric Trades Association (META) has organised a three-day exhibition of consumer electrical products at Rani Meyammai and Rajah Muthiah halls in Egmore starting Sunday.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, META officer-bearers said the exhibition would cater to dealers, architects, consultants, builders and electrical engineers, apart from direct home consumers. The Association's president Hukmichand D.Shah said: "The main aim of the exhibition is to identify the requirements of the market through feedback of the visitors." Several new products, including an `unbreakable' energy-saver bulb that is also waterproof and a shock-resistant PVC switch box suggested as replacement for the traditional wooden boxes, would be on display.

Most of the products would be from wholesalers of New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. Imported goods from Italy, Germany, Australia and Austria would also be on display.

Tamil Nadu is one of the largest consumers of electrical products in the country. According to estimates provided by META, the State purchases electrical goods worth Rs. 5,000 crore every year. Manufacturing though has suffered in the State. Mr. Shah appealed to the government to create a special economic zone in the State for electrical manufacturing units.

"Postpone VAT"

The dealers have also appealed to the government to postpone the introduction of VAT from January 1, 2007 to March 31, 2007. "This will help us maintain proper set of books of accounts till the end of this financial year. Change in tax structure in middle of a year would create confusion," they added.
