Annan condoles flood deaths in India

United Nations: United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, expressing sadness over the Indian floods that killed hundreds and affected millions, has said the world body is prepared to help the Government in dealing with the disaster.

"The Secretary-General regrets the loss of life due to this tragedy and extends his condolences to the victims and their families," said a statement released here on Friday. Mr. Annan commended Indian authorities for their rapid search-and-rescue operations.

He regretted the damage caused to property by the floods that affected Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Mr. Annan said the world body "stands ready to offer any assistance requested by the Indian Government to support the national response to this disaster." — UNI
