Call to earn carbon credits

Two-day national symposium on conservation of biodiversity


  • Reduced emission levels qualify a country for World Bank aid
  • United Nations Framework of Convention on Climate Change will monitor the progress of clean development and carbon credits through its registered brokers
  • The US has an objection on the plea that meeting emission reduction targets will hurt its economy

    VIJAYAWADA: If reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is significant in a State, it gets carbon credits so that the World Bank considers its case for sanctioning developmental programmes. Organisations and colleges can acquire carbon credits from the United Nations Framework of Convention on Climate Change by participating in long-term weather change programmes.

    The suggestions came at the two-day national symposium on `Conservation of biodiversity and applications of biotechnology' organised by the Andhra Loyola College. In a lecture on `Carbon credits: earn by saving environment', Sujay Biotech managing director M. Lakshmi Prasad said the UNFCC would monitor the progress of clean development and carbon credits through its brokers. . There would be a bright future for organisations acquiring carbon credits by doing good work on the environment front, he said.

    Widespread awareness

    Stating that most developed nations ratified the Kyoto Protocol, Mr. Prasad said the US had an objection on the plea that meeting emission reduction targets would hurt its economy. However, awareness about emission reduction mission had spread far and wide, he said.ALC Principal S. Emmanuel and Sri Krishnadevaraya University botany professor T. Pullaiah were present.
