Kochi: Realising the need to create more awareness against tobacco use, a team of researchers from the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences has come up with a project for multiple training in the area of tobacco cessation. The project, sponsored by the University Grants Commission, will be implemented in two phases in Ernakulam district. The first phase consists of training programmes on tobacco cessation interventions for doctors, nurses, social workers, counsellors, social work faculty and nursing tutors. The aim is to establish a network of personnel equipped to provide services to individuals who want to quit tobacco, according to a press release. The second phase will focus on awareness programmes among different groups in the country, says Jacquleen J., faculty of the Department of Social Work and principal investigator of the project. Experts say that tobacco use is responsible for nearly 50 per cent of all heart attacks and cardiovascular deaths. Tobacco is directly responsible for the death of half of its lifelong users, taking an average of 14 years off their lives. Dr. Jacquleen says that there have been efforts to create tobacco-free communities in Kochi. But the focus has not been on treatment of tobacco addiction.
