TIRUCHI: Speakers at a seminar on the `World Breastfeeding Day' organised under the aegis of the Social Welfare Department here on Friday, appealed to the young mothers to eschew myths about the practice of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding will not affect beauty. Mothers should feed their children for the first two years.

Collector Ashish Vachhani, who presided, stressed the role of anganwadi workers in creating awareness among the masses about the advantages of the practice. Breastfeeding had a direct impact on the overall development of a child's health and intelligence quotient. Women should be aware of the fact that there was no substitute to mother's milk.

The District Programme Officer, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), S. Revathy, said as part of the theme of the year, an intensive campaign was being launched on the provisions of the `Infant Milk Substitute Act.' Pamphlets on the provisions of the Act were being distributed and explained to the masses, she said. The Collector gave away prizes to the winners of the `Healthy Baby' contest.

He declared open an exhibition in which nutritious dishes and beverages made from vegetables, greens, millets and pulses were displayed.
