Staff Reporter

She was caught while trying to dispose of a body near Hebbal Lake

BANGALORE: A pushcart vendor caught a woman, who along with a man, was trying to dispose of the body of a woman near the Hebbal Lake on Saturday.

The police said that around 8.30 a.m. Venkatesh, who sells eatables at the Forest Department park near the Hebbal Lake, noticed a man and a woman suspiciously moving on the service road near the park.

When Venkatesh questioned the couple who were carrying a gunny bag, they abandoned the bag and tried to leave the place in a hurry. Venkatesh, with the help of a Forest Department employee, caught them. But the man managed to escape, the police said.

Suspecting foul play, the supervisor of the park called the Hebbal police station.

The police rushed to the spot and opened the gunny bag. They found the body of woman aged around 25 in it.

Her throat had been slit, the police said.

The arrested woman identified herself as Mumtaz of Hyderabad.

She gave the name of the murdered woman as Lakshmi Devi alias Uma, a resident of Kodigenehalli in Madugiri taluk of Tumkur district, the police said.

During interrogation, Mumtaz claimed that along with three men she had murdered the woman in Tumkur in the early hours of Saturday. Later, Mumtaz and her accomplice brought the body in a lorry and got down on the service road near the Hebbal Lake, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Malini Krishna Murthy told The Hindu that both Mumtaz and the murdered woman were "apparently into flesh trade."

A team led by Hebbal inspector S. Badarinath has left for Tumkur for investigation.

Ms. Krishna Murthy said they were on the lookout for Mumtaz's three accomplices.

"Things will be clear once the investigation team returns from Tumkur," she said.
