This Day That Age
The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, made an impassioned plea in Madras on August 12 that "each one of us in our own humble way should try to follow the path Mahatma Gandhi chalked out for us and for the world." The President, who was participating in a prayer-meeting at the Gandhi Mandapam, Guindy, pointed out to the gathering that their whole life, culture, civilisation and contribution were based on things which Gandhiji preached, taught and practised. "The greatest and best memorial for him will be in our heart." The President, accompanied by the Governor, Mr. Sri Prakasa, joined the prayer-meeting at about 6-30 p.m. In his speech, the President said: "I am happy I have had an opportunity to come and spend a few days with you in this city. Three years ago, I decided I should spend a part of the year somewhere in the South. We observe two national days in the year - August 15 and January 26. I decided that while I should spend January 26 in Delhi, I should spend August 15 every year somewhere in the South. In accordance with that decision, I spent August 15 for the first time in Bangalore and the second at Kurnool. This time I am going to spend the day in your great city."
