Survey findings

This refers to the findings of The Hindu -CNN-IBN State of the Nation Survey. The various parameters for the methodology have been intelligently identified to make the results interpretable and truly reflective. Congratulations to the CSDS. Besides the reasons identified in the survey, the overall satisfaction of the common man with the Government, the distinct upsurge in prosperity and the stable foreign policy are also the principal factors that have led to a rise in the UPA's popular support.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's decision to renounce the Prime Minister's post after the 2004 elections has been vindicated by the survey findings. She took the wind out of the BJP's sails then, and has now become the tallest leader in the country enjoying the goodwill of the people with no negative image. She seems to have co-ordinated the functioning of the government and the party well along with the Prime Minister. Hence the combined stock of these two leaders is much higher.

Yet it is too early to write off the regional parties which have a strong organisational base, and are expected to become more determined to form a viable third front as they command a sizeable vote share.

S.A. Nasser Khan,
Chennai
