Guntur
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: Guntur became the eighth city in Andhra Pradesh to initiate formation of Federation of Urban Self-Help Groups with Andhra Pradesh Urban Services for the Poor taking a cue from the rural experience. Urban poverty is constantly on the rise with the urban population increasing from 14 per cent at the time of Independence to 27 per cent now and is projected to go up to 40 per cent of national population in the next 15 years, said APUSP Project Coordinator B. Janardhana Reddy here on Sunday. Initiating a dialogue between members of 40,000 self-help groups successfully operating in the rural areas of the district and Urban SHG members at the Council Hall of the Guntur Municipal Corporation, he said the Government expects empowerment of urban poor women to be achieved. Guntur was in the second place in the bank credit linkage to groups in the State behind Kurnool in rural areas, which must be replicated in urban pockets also, he told urban SHG women.
Fruitful interaction
A three-hour interaction between rural and urban women was a fruitful exercise. DRDA Project Director Bhaskar promised Mayor Kanna Nagaraju and Commissioner D. Rama Rao to support GMC fully in the formation of the federation by deputing one experienced person from the DRDA to organise the systems. An exchange programme also was chalked out next week so that some representatives of Urban SHGs could study the functioning at a rural place.
