Akali MLA remanded

CHANDIGARH: Even as the duty magistrate remanded the Punjab MLA, Gaganjit Singh, who has been arrested on charges of raping a maid, to police custody for one day, the Inspector General (IG) of the Chandigarh Police, has transferred the investigation into the case to the Crime Branch, which has begun recording statements.

Noisy scenes were witnessed, when Mr. Singh was produced before the magistrate on Sunday. Supporters from Dhuri, the constituency Mr. Singh represents in the State Assembly, raised slogans, alleging that their legislator had been framedby by the Congress in a false case.
