Action sought against officials, contractors

Staff Correspondent

They allegedly attacked sangha activists who were on a protest

Raichur: The Karnataka Raitha Sangha (KRS) has sought action against officials of the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam (KBJN) and a group of contractors for their "attack" on sangha workers while they were agitating against the alleged malpractices in the implementation of the Narayanapura Right Bank Canal (NRBC) of the Upper Krishna Project in Deodurga taluk.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, R. Manasaiah, president of the State unit of the sangha, said for the past one year the sangha had been agitating against the alleged malpractices in the implementation of the NRBC in Raichur district. Recently, it organised a conference at Deodurga taluk to motivate the affected ayacutdars to continue their agitation demanding that the Government set right anomalies in the implementation of the project.

But the officials of the KBJN and contractors were trying to suppress the agitating farmers, he said. He said that on Thursday officials of the Deodurga division of the KBJN and a group of four contractors had allegedly attacked Basawaraj Hurkadli and Chennappa Sagar, activists of the sangha, while they were participating in an agitation organised by affected farmers in Gabbur village of Deodurga taluk. The sangha had lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police against all accused. But the police failed to arrest the accused, he said.
