TAMBARAM: Women contestants stole the show at `Youth Rocks - Life Beyond', a talent hunt organised by Twilight Corpos, an event management company, at the Convention Hall of the Chennai Trade Centre at Nandambakkam on Saturday.

Women bagged the first three places while men had to be content with two `promising talents' awards.

The event management company, according to organisers, staged the show for the first time.

From around 150 youth who responded to its advertisement, 16 were short listed for the final event.

After the first round that tested the talents of each of the competitors, eight were short listed for the final round. This tested their presence of mind.

With the jury — actor Mumtaz, playback singer S.N. Surendar and music composer of `Paarijatham' Dharan — posing tricky questions to the final eight contestants, Madhumitha emerged the winner of `Youth Rocks' with Sashi and Vijina taking the second and third places.

Madhumitha enthralled the audience with her rendition of `jalatharangam' in the first round.

The limited audience pleased neither the contestants, the jury, the organisers nor DJ Sathish, who conducted the show.

Mr. Surendar, Ms. Mumtaz and Sathish, who hosted the show, expressed displeasure at the manner in which the audience conducted itself.

Apart from power interruptions and technical snags that delayed the performance of the contestants, the behaviour of the audience throughout the show soured proceedings.

Often, Mumtaz had to ask the audience to maintain silence, reminding them it "was easy to emit cat calls from the crowd but very difficult to perform on stage."
