PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry Government is planning to bring in legislation to curb video piracy in the Union Territory. Official sources said the Government would usher in a stringent law to curb the growing piracy. After meeting representatives from the Tamil Nadu film industry on Sunday, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has directed Senior Superintendent of Police B. Srikanth to give report on the action taken against dealers in pirated CDs and DVDs of new Tamil films. The representatives, who came in a procession from Bussy Street to the Assembly, urged the Chief Minister to take necessary action to bring down piracy. In their memorandum, they pinpointed four persons as the main force behind the video piracy operation in Pondicherry. According to them, the four have shifted their base to the Union Territory after the Tamil Nadu Government brought video piracy under the Goondas Act. They have also named a prominent video parlour in the town as the nodal point. The representatives told the Chief Minister that recent crackdown on piracy in Tamil Nadu had revealed that the CDs and DVDs were routed from Pondicherry. They suggested the Chief Minister to bring legislation on the lines of the Tamil Nadu Government. The industry also asked the Government to give tax exemption for films having Tamil names. The members told reporters after the meeting that the Chief Minister had promised to take necessary action.
