Chief tantri seeks new managing committee for Sabarimala temple

Special Correspondent

Favours the conduct of a new Devaprasnam

  • Says `no' to remedial rituals for the recent Devaprasnam
  • Devaprasnam astrologer accused of going beyond his brief

KOCHI: The row over the Sabarimala Devprasnam took a new turn on Sunday with the chief tantri and others calling for setting up a managing committee to manage the temple's administration in place of the current Devaswom Board. Chief tantri Kandararu Maheswararu also said that since the recent Devaprasnam was "unwarranted and invalid," he would not the give permission for carrying out the `remedial rituals' for the `flaws' at Sabarimala detected in the Devaprasnam.

If necessary, he told a news conference, another Devaprasnam could be conducted and remedial rituals for the flaws thus detected could be carried out. He favoured a new Devaprasnam and wanted to shelve the findings of the recent one.

Pandalam Palace representative R.R. Varma; president of the Yogakshema Sabha M.V.S. Namboodiri and Chief tantri's grandson Rahul Iswar attended the press conference. They said the high-power committee, appointed by the High Court in 1990 could be asked to recommend the managing committee.

He also said that Parappanangadi Unnikrishna Panicker, who had carried out the recent Devaprasnam, had gone beyond his brief and made unnecessary observations in the `Prasna-chcharth.' He had only been asked to check whether Lord Ayyappa favoured carrying out developmental activities in the vicinity of the temple. Instead, he had gone far beyond this and made a lot of controversial observations.
