KOCHI: The Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA) has demanded that the educational institutions with Christian managements should end the practice of levying hefty amounts as capitation fee from students. A convention to protect the rights of the laymen organised by the KLCA at Ernakulam Town Hall on Sunday warned the Christian managements that unless the practice of charging capitation fee was stopped immediately, they would be forced to stage agitations. A resolution adopted by the convention said the private managements, which gave salary and other benefits to the staff from the Government, had no right to charge exorbitant amounts for granting admission and filling the vacancies. It said the campaign by the Church authorities against the KLCA for taking an `anti-Church stance' was an attempt by the authorities to cover up their faults. KLCA State president Felix J. Pulloodan, who inaugurated the convention, said that the Kerala Professional Colleges Regulation Act- 2006 was highly beneficial to the people belonging to the backward sections of society.
