NEW DELHI: Leading national and global developmental organisations have called for developing concrete measures to ensure safe labour migration across the world. This was stressed at a regional consultation organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the South Asia Regional Initiative and Equity Support Programme in the Capital this past week where several key issues relating to the safety of migrants and natives were discussed. At the meeting, non-government organisation Centre for Social Research (CSR) presented a paper on the issue where it stressed the need for developing a multilateral framework for a rights-based approach to labour migration like "safe migration policy" to look into issues like nexus between unsafe migration and trafficking, overseas employment policies, migration and administrative framework. Stating that poor and uneducated women and young men fall prey to unsafe migration practices, which often lead to serious crimes like human trafficking, CSR director Ranjana Kumari said: "Poverty driven women migrants are vulnerable as they have less negotiation power and are ready to work in appalling conditions. Concentrated in traditionally female occupations such as domestic work and nursing, these women face higher risks and gender discrimination due to lack of awareness about local laws and socio-cultural practices."
