Traders urge Manmohan to convene all-party meeting on sealing

`A consensus approach is the need of the hour'

New Delhi: Agitated over the recent Supreme court order to partly stay some provisions of the Delhi Laws (Special provisions) Act, aimed at putting a one year moratorium on the demolition and sealing process in Delhi, traders of Delhi have urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to call an all-party meeting to deliberate on the issue.

In a communication send to Dr. Singh, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), apex body of the trading community, said the matter being connected with future and livelihood of lakhs of Delhi citizens needs immediate attention of the Government and a consensus approach is the need of the hour.

The CAIT has urged the Prime Minister to convene an emergent meeting of the representatives of all political parties. The representatives from trade may also be invited to such meeting to place their genuine concerns on this issue. It has also sought an audience with the Prime Minister.

In the communication, CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal has drawn the attention of the Prime Minister towards the anarchic situation that was likely to prevail in Delhi once the sealing process begins its second innings from September 16 as per orders of Supreme Court.

"The sealing of shops will badly hit the livelihood of not only the trading community but of lakhs of poor people dependent upon it," he said.

"The concept of self employed persons, the large base of revenue, will also be shattered greatly," the communiqué said.

"Overlooking humanitarian considerations and legitimate needs of the people of Delhi will be an act of violation of principle of natural justice. The fate of lakhs of people of Delhi can not be left merely on the mercy of an order especially when Parliament has already taken cognisance of the matter and had passed an Act couple of months before", it said.. -- UNI
