MANGALORE: The crime rate in Dakshina Kannada district for the first six months this year has declined considerably compared to the same period of the previous year according to the mid-year crime review report, B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, has said. While crimes under the Indian Penal Code have declined by approximately 19 per cent, serious crimes such as murders have declined by 21 per cent. While nine cases of dacoity were reported during the first half of last year, only two cases have been reported during the current year till June 30. Under property offences, burglaries have come down by 23 per cent while house thefts have increased by six per cent. Ordinary thefts have come down by 14 per cent and motor vehicle thefts have come down by 25 per cent. Reports of offences such as cheating, criminal breach of trust are fewer this year compared to the first half of last year. Fatal accidents have come down by six per cent; non-fatal (minor) accidents too have fallen by 12 per cent. Riots have come down by 33 per cent, simple assault by 37 per cent and attempt to murder by 10 per cent.
Crimes against women
A cause of concern, however, is that certain heads under offences against women has shown an increase. While rapes and domestic torture by men have increased considerably, molestation and dowry offences have come down marginally, according to Mr. Dayananda.
