CHENNAI : The Chennai city police have detained three persons, including an AIADMK functionary, under the Goondas Act on charges of smuggling rectified spirit. A special PEW team from Adyar intercepted an Ambassador car near Nainarkuppam on the East Coast Road in the wee hours of July 26, 2006 and took them into custody. Police seized three containers carrying 35 litres each of rectified spirit. The three-member gang, which had allegedly been smuggling rectified spirit from Bangalore and selling the stuff in Kancheepuram district, was notified as wanted by various police stations. The accused were identified as Shankar alias "Morappakkam" Shankar (38) of Morappakkam, Rajendran alias "Nondi" Rajendran (25) of Kaatankulathur Kancheepuram district and Sudakar (22) of Chengalpattu district. They had been engaged in buying and selling rectified spirit for the last five years. According to a press note issued here on Sunday, a special party had recently unearthed a huge quantity of over 11,000 litres of rectified spirit from a godown in Medavakkam Veerabadra Nagar a month ago, which was run by the three accused. Based on a recommendation by Joint Commissioner of Police (South) Dorairaj, the Commissioner of Police Letika Saran ordered detention of the trio under the Goondas Act. Shankar alias Morappakkam Shankar is an AIADMK functionary in Acharapakkam Union and is also serving as Morappakkam panchayat president, the note concluded.
