Traffic planning exercise begins

Coimbatore : The Additional Director-General of Police, State Traffic Planning Cell, K.R. Shyam Sunder, recently said that the police have started soliciting public feedback for mooting a comprehensive plan for traffic management.

To begin with a study was being done in Coimbatore to ascertain the requirements for improving the traffic conditions in terms of road engineering and designing. Similar exercises would be held at Tirupur, Kancheepuram and Madurai in a phased manner.

He was talking to reporters after holding a meeting at the city police office with representatives of the associations of residential colonies, public forums, consumer bodies, trade and industrial bodies soliciting their feedback on the improvements required. Officials from the highways, transport department and corporation attended the meeting. The objective was to enlist the problem prone pockets, reasons and suggestions to resolve these problems. The associations also could prioritise them depending on the nature of the problem. The local officials would examine these feedbacks and suggest remedial measures.

Objective

Then the services of the Traffic Lab, Traffic Engineering Cell of the highways department and other consultants involved in planning traffic and transport would be availed. A detailed study would be made on the traffic pattern and volume such as vehicles per hour and nature of vehicles using the road. The study would also focus on nature of accidents, vehicles involved, timing of accidents and reasons for the same. Based on the study, a plan would be mooted by the State Traffic Planning Cell and forwarded to the Government for taking up the works on a priority basis.
