Coimbatore: As a matter of abundant precaution, the police have stepped up security for the Independence Day. The new measures came into effect on Sunday night and will be in force till Wednesday morning. A detailed security scheme has been drawn up for the entire West Zone under the direct supervision of the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, A. Subramanian. In the communally sensitive pockets in Coimbatore city and Rural district, the measures are being implemented under the direct supervision of the DIG of Police, Coimbatore range, M.N. Manjunatha, (holding additional charge of Coimbatore city).
Sensitive pockets
The Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural district, A.T. Duraikumar, will head the arrangements in the sensitive pockets in Tirupur, Mettuppalayam and Perur sub-divisions of Coimbatore district. The Deputy Commissioners of Police, K. Shanmugavel (Law and Order) and P.C. Thenmozhi (Crime), will supervise the security arrangements in Coimbatore city. Since there has been no pointed intelligence on the possibility of any sabotage attempts, the arrangements will be precautionary in nature, police say. In Coimbatore city, all the check-posts on arterial, feeder and inter-State roads are being reactivated with deployment of gun-totting police personnel for conducting vehicle checks. Armed guards are being posted at vital installations. The number of pickets in road junctions and patrol vehicles has been increased to maintain tight vigil. The VOC Park, where the Collector is scheduled to unfurl the national Tricolour, will witness tight security including aerial surveillance by binocular wielding police personnel from high buildings.
