Man detained from outside Tihar

NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old man was detained while allegedly trying to sneak into the Tihar Jail complex in West Delhi on Sunday. The suspect, Aejaz Ansari, was spotted moving under suspicious circumstances near gate No. 3 of the jail around 10-30 a.m. Subsequently, he was taken into custody and handed over to the police. During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that he was a resident of Champaran in Bihar. He claimed he did not know that he had strayed into the jail complex.

URJA criticises DISCOMS

NEW DELHI: Urja, apex body of Resident Welfare Associations' in the Capital, on Sunday came down heavily on private discoms for long unannounced power cuts and demanded an inquiry into the allegation of malpractices against them.

Various Residents' Welfare Associations in Delhi criticised the companies for long power cuts ranging from seven to eight hours particularly on Sunday when major markets and offices were closed.

Court asks Apollo to submit records

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed the Apollo Hospital to submit the daily treatment schedule of the patients, who allegedly died due to negligence during their admission in the hospital.

While hearing a PIL, a Division Bench comprising Justice MK Sharma and Justice Hima Kohli asked counsel Lalit Bhasin appearing for the premier hospital to submit a report on the functioning of the infection control committee by November 16, the next date of hearing.

The bench also directed the Apollo hospital to make available the records of daily treatment schedule of the deceased patients named in the petition to the committee for examination by an expert panel.

Court grants relief to Jordanian

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has suspended the 10-year jail sentence of Jordanian national Robert Saleem, who was convicted of raping a doctor here four years ago.

Justice S N Agarwal suspended the sentence on the condition that Salam submitted a bail bond of Rs.25,000 and a surety of an equal amount.

Saleem moved an application in the High Court, through his counsel Manjit Singh Ahluwalia, contending that he had already spent four-and half years behind bars and his appeal against the conviction by the lower court was likely to take some more time.

Justice Agarwal directed the Saleem furnish his latest residential address before the trial court.

Dharna continues

NEW DELHI: The "people's referendum" to demonstrate mass public resentment against the proposed amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2005 entered the sixth day at the ongoing dharna site at Jantar Mantar on Sunday. On the other hand, the hunger strike by Magsaysay award winner Sandeep Pandey against the decision of the UPA Government to amend the RTI Act entered the fifth day.

On Saturday, former MP and journalist Kuldip Nayar lent his support to the cause and favoured that the law should not be changed from what it stands today. Other prominent people including journalist Prabash Joshi, Planning Commission member B.N. Yugandhar and social activist Swami Agnivesh also visited the dharna site and extended their support to the campaign.
