Steps taken for safety of cricket team

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Government of India has been in touch with the Sri Lankan Government through its High Commission in Colombo to put in place additional measures to ensure the safety of the Indian cricket team, which is in the Sri Lankan capital.

Top South Block sources told this correspondent that security measures would be put in place to ensure the safety of the Indian cricket team. According to the sources, Monday's blast was not connected with the cricket fixtures.

An External Affairs Ministry spokesman condemned all incidents of terrorism in Sri Lanka. He deplored the targeting of a "diplomatic convoy" in Colombo on Mondayin which nine persons were killed. Pakistan's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka was said to be the target of the terrorist attack.

The spokesman said that India was committed to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. Asked if New Delhi was prepared to back these words with action given the current situation in the island nation, the spokesman felt he was being drawn into a "hypothetical" area.
