NEW DELHI: Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on Monday greeted the people on the occasion of Independence Day and Janmashtami (August 16). Paying homage to freedom fighters who had freed India from colonial rule, Mr. Shekhawat said: "Let us celebrate the day with joy and pride and dedicate ourselves to realise the goal of making India a developed country, free from the scourges of poverty, illiteracy and under-development." Separately, he said: "Janmashtami reminds us of the timeless relevance of Sri Krishna's birth and enjoins upon us to follow His immortal teachings that have the power to rid us from turbulence and moral decay. Srimad Bhagwat Gita, expounded by Him, is a moral treasure trove, guiding humanity to stay on the righteous path at all times."
