Pondicherry: The Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, Mukut Mithi, has in his Independence Day message said that August 15, 1947 marked the beginning of a new era and Independence was achieved through a non-violent revolutionary movement. He called upon the citizens on the occasion of the 60th Independence Day to take a pledge to rededicate themselves to fulfil aspirations of the founding fathers of the nation, to make India great, to stand tall among the nations of the earth, as she did in the days of yore. He extended his heartiest greetings and good wishes for peace, prosperity and happiness in the life of the people of Pondicherry on the momentous occasion. Speaker R. Radhakrishnan said that it was the duty of everyone to recall the selfless sacrifices made by freedom fighters for the liberation of the country. He appealed to the people to ensure that the sovereignty of the nation was preserved and unity safeguarded. Pondy Pradesh Congress Committee president P. Shanmugham said that the people should be alert to the divisive forces that were posing a threat to the unity and integrity of the nation. He appealed to all sections of people to extend their full cooperation for the successful implementation of various welfare schemes the Central and State Governments were bringing out to uplift the lot of the have-nots. The general secretary of the AICC, V. Narayanasamy MP and the PMK Parliamentary Party leader, M. Ramadoss were among those who greeted the people on the occasion.
