PONDICHERRY: Security in and around Pondicherry has been tightened to prevent any untoward incident during the Independence Day celebrations. Additional Senior Superintendent of Police B. Srikanth told The Hindu that 600 police personnel would be deployed for security. A meeting of senior officers was held on Sunday to discuss the steps to be taken to intensify vigil. Security had been stepped up in crowded places and on the Assembly premises. From the day of the serial blasts in the Mumbai suburban trains, police had been conducting regular checks in hotels, especially during weekends. Night patrolling has also been stepped up. "This has been further intensified," the official said. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Station here has stepped up vigil along the Pondicherry coast, in the wake of the terrorist threat to Kalpakkam Atomic Power Station. The Station Commanding Officer, N. Somasundaram, said that during the Independence Day celebrations an interceptor craft of the Coast Guard would be patrolling the waters near the Kalpakkam coast.
