Corrections and clarifications

  • A pointer in the info box in "Final decision on cola ban rests with Centre, says Buddhadeb" (August 14, 2006) was: "India should directly intervene on the Sri Lanka issue". As a reader points out, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who was speaking at a press conference in Chennai, did not say this. It should have been "India should not directly intervene on the Sri Lanka issue". The text gets this detail right.

  • The sentence in "Doordarshan's Urdu channel from August 15" (August 14, 2006) was: "Slated for launch by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday evening, the channel goes on air a good eight-and-a-half months behind schedule". As a reader points out, it should have been "seven-and-a-half months".

  • A reader says: "In the news item `Conversion: Government sanction for prosecution not required' (August 10, 2006), the heading is exactly the opposite of what the Supreme Court ruled. It said, `... though Section 196 (1) Cr.PC contemplated sanction from the Central, or State government or the district magistrate for prosecution of offences under Section 153-B IPC (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), there was no bar on registration of a case or investigation by the police.' The heading should have been `Conversion: Government sanction for registration and investigation not required'."

  • The report "Parliament passes Juvenile Justice Bill" (August 9, 2006) did not make it clear whether the Bill [Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Bill 2006] was passed in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Both Houses passed the Bill that day. The report was based on the discussions that day in the Rajya Sabha.

  • The report "High Court orders removal of unauthorised hoardings" (Chennai city, August 11, 2006, page 1) said that the cut-off date for the regularisation of unauthorised hoardings in Chennai as fixed by the High Court was June 15, 2006. As a reader points out, it should have been June 15, 2001.

  • In the Shashi Tharoor column "Things that happen only in India" (The Hindu-Magazine, August 13, 2006, page 3), the sentence was: "The Constitution of India recognises 18 languages today, ... ." A few readers say that it is incorrect. The websites of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs, say that under the Eighth Schedule (Articles 344 (1) and 351) there are 22 languages.

  • Referring to the info box titled "Insensitive Measures", that accompanied the feature "When Vellore made history" (Young World, August 11, 2006, page 1), a reader points out that the name of the commander-in-chief of the Madras Army Sir John Craddock was misspelt as Sir John Cradick.
