Ceasefire in Lebanon

The month-long ordeal of the people of Lebanon has come to an end, thanks to the intervention, even if belated, of the United Nations. But at what cost? The unjust and inhuman war waged by Israel has claimed over 700 Lebanese lives, damaging the social and economic fabric of the tiny country. Countering Hizbollah was only a pretext for the imperialists to wage war. It is time the saner voices of the world decried such atrocities of the imperial order.

N. Divakar,
Mysore

The UNSC resolution 1701 calling for the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hizbollah is just a mirage without any comprehensive framework to establish permanent peace in the region. While the efforts to bring about a ceasefire are commendable, the resolution should have been drafted with the aspirations of the people of Lebanon and justifiable demands of Hizbollah in mind.

Muralidharan Raju Iyer,
Chennai

It is shocking that the UNSC resolution does not contain any clause that obliges Israel to pay Lebanon compensation for the destruction of civilian life and property. How can the brutal massacre of Qana go unpunished?

Mohammed Siraj,
Coimbatore

The ceasefire is a victory for the U.N. Israel exhibited its intolerance by retaliating disproportionately against innocent Lebanese for the sake of its two captured soldiers. For securing their release, it lost more than 95 lives — half of them soldiers. Thankfully, good sense prevailed and Israel accepted the ceasefire deal.

Sambi Reddy Endreddy,
Hyderabad

The editorial "Back from the brink" (Aug. 14) which chastises Israel for its inhuman targeting of innocent civilians in Lebanon, says nothing of Hizbollah's rocket attacks on Israeli cities. Had it not been for their unguided nature, the rockets would have caused huge damage to civilian life and infrastructure in Israel too. Hizbollah fired these rockets to kill civilians, which was also inhuman.

Anjani Kumar Narnur,
Marietta, Georgia

Hizbollah has shown contempt for the civilians of Lebanon and Israel by placing its missile launchers in civilian areas and firing rockets into Israeli civilian areas inviting a harsh Israeli response. It has only used the high Lebanese casualties to vilify Israel in the international media.

Ravi George Mathew,
Chennai
