NEW DELHI: Jeevan Nedunechezhiyan recovered from a lapse in concentration to beat the fleet-footed Cheong-Eui Kim of Korea 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the ITF men's Satellite circuit second leg at the DLTA Complex here on Monday. On a day when a heavy spell of rain forced abandonment of play for five hours, the left-handed Jeevan, a trainee of the TTT Warrior Academy in Chennai, took the first set thanks to a solitary break.
Wresting the initiative
He looked to have wrested the initiative once again in the second set when he broke the Korean in the first game, but got broken in the sixth game. To his credit, Jeevan regrouped well in time to wrap the match up.
Authoritative game
In another keenly anticipated encounter, top seed Vivek Shokeen played an authoritative game before his familiar opponent Aditya Madkekar retired after the first set with an arm injury. Madkekar had beaten Shokeen in the second round last week. The semifinalist of the first leg, Vijay Kannan too limped out as he pulled a muscle on his left thigh, after having lost the first set against Purav Raja. Jaco Mathew returned to the circuit on a successful note with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Tushar Liberhan after having been down 1-4 in the second set. The results: Singles (first round): Vivek Shokeen bt Aditya Madkekar 6-2 (retired); Ashutosh Singh bt Gurmehar Singh 6-0, 6-1; Arjun Goutham bt Vijay Sundar Prashanth 6-2, 7-6(3); Purav Raja bt Vijay Kannan 6-2 (retired): Jaco Mathew bt Tushar Liberhan 6-1, 6-4; Stephen Amritraj bt Tai Wei Liu (Tpe) 3-6, 7-5, 6-3; Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan bt Cheong-Eui Kim (Kor) 6-4, 6-4. Doubles (pre-quarterfinals): Divij Sharan and Navdeep Singh w.o. Arjun Goutham and Aditya Madkekar; Mustafa Ghouse and Pathanjali Ravishankar bt Sumit Prakash Gupta and Kiran Nandakumar 6-4, 6-4.
