Varsity constituent college near Valparai

10 acres identified for permanent building

Coimbatore: A constituent college of Bharathiar University will come up this academic year near Valparai, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said here on Sunday.

He told The Hindu that he had visited the hill station on Saturday and inspected an unoccupied hospital building at Cinchona near Valparai, where the college could be located on a temporary basis until a permanent building was constructed.

"It is a three-level building and we are going to take two levels for the college. Some civil work needs to be done but there is adequate water and power. The Government has identified ten acres of land near Valparai bus stand where a permanent building for the college will come up within two years," he observed.

Prof. Thiruvasagam said that he had visited Valaparai following the announcement in the State Assembly that a constituent college of the university would be established in the region.

There was already one at Gudalur in the Nilgiris district.

Job-oriented courses

He said that he had consulted the headmasters of schools in the area and found that the courses likely to be most in demand were job-oriented ones that involved computer science.

A majority of the people were from the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. Courses such as B.Sc. Computer Science, Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), B.Com. Computer Applications and Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) were likely to be offered. A final decision would be taken only after the Syndicate gave its approval. About 650 students studied up to Plus Two in the three schools in the area, but those who wanted to study further had to go to colleges in Pollachi, Udumalpet or Coimbatore.

The inability to pay high fees resulted in 75 per cent of the students opting for courses where job opportunities were few. Hence, a Government college in Valparai would provide more convenient access to higher education.
