CHENNAI: All vital installations in the city have come under a massive security blanket ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday.

The entire police machinery is geared for the occasion, City Police Commissioner Letika Saran said on Monday.

Security has remained tight since last Friday as a precautionary measure. Important places, including Centre/State buildings, are being monitored round the clock.

Teams led by a Joint Commissioner and three Deputy Commissioners of Police are on night rounds. Vehicle checks are done at vantage points and randomly at specific locations, she told reporters.

A senior officer in the city police said, "Though there is no specific threat from any quarter, elaborate security arrangements are in place to ensure nothing untoward happens. The vehicle checks will continue throughout the night," the officer said and sought public cooperation.

With Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi scheduled to hoist the national flag at the Secretariat complex in Fort St George, the entire area would be cordoned off and vehicles with valid passes alone would be permitted. Traffic arrangements have been modified, a traffic police officer said.

Additional Commissioner of Police S R Jangid said, "The security arrangements will continue for some more time in the city... including the checks in larger public interest."
