Wage hike under job guarantee scheme

BANGALORE: The Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj has issued an order increasing the daily wage paid to unskilled workers under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and Total Rural Employment Scheme (TERS) based on the Consumer Price Index, from Rs. 62.50 to Rs. 69 with effect from August 1.

The order said a portion of the wages would be paid in the form of foodgrains (3 kg at the rate of Rs. 6.25 a kg) and the remaining Rs. 50.25 in cash to workers employed under the TERS and the entire amount in cash to workers employed under the NREGS, an official press note said. — Special Correspondent

Governor extends greetings

Bangalore: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi has extended his greetings to the people of the State on the occasion of the 59th anniversary of the country's independence.

In a statement here, the Governor said that on this solemn occasion when the nation faces immense challenges, "let us rededicate ourselves to the cause of nation-building with determination and vision to carry out the continuing tasks of development. Let us pay homage to the members of the Defence services and paramilitary forces who have enabled us to live with hope and confidence, honour and dignity."

Lorries to carry only prescribed load

BANGALORE: The Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners Associations has decided that lorries will carry only the prescribed load in the interest of public safety. The announcement came after strict regulations were put in place by the Transport Commissioner.

Federation president B. Channa Reddy welcomed the move and urged those who hire lorries not to overload them. "In case excess loading is found when checked, officials will offload the excess weight on the spot, exposing truckers to difficulties."

Mr. Reddy said that after a meeting of truck owners it was decided to carry only the prescribed load from August 20. — Staff Reporter

HAL bags flower show trophies

BANGALORE: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) bagged the Mayor's Rolling Cup and the Sri Balekundry Memorial General Championship Rolling Trophy at the Suvarna Karnataka Independence Day Horticultural Show here on Monday. The trophies are given to organisations that win the maximum number of prizes.

A.K. Saxena, Managing Director, Bangalore complex of HAL, received the trophies. HAL won 180 first prizes and 24 rolling shields. A press note from HAL said it planned to plant one lakh saplings to make Bangalore greener. — Staff Reporter

Siddaramaiah to tour 23 districts

Bangalore: The former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will undertake a Statewide tour prior to the September 3 merger of the All-India Progressive Janata Dal with the Congress. The Congress plans to hold a massive rally in Bangalore on that day, which Congress president Sonia Gandhi will address.

Mr. Siddaramaiah will visit Bidar and Gulbarga on August 17; Raichur, Koppal and Bellary on August 18; Chitradurga, Davangere, Haveri and Hubli on August 19; Gadag and Bagalkot on August 20; Bijapur and Belgaum on August 21; Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Hassan on August 22; Tumkur and Kolar on August 23; Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar on August 24; and Bangalore on August 25. — Special Correspondent

59 convicts to be released

MYSORE: Fifty-nine convicts serving life sentence in the Mysore Central Jail will be released on Tuesday on compassionate grounds during the Independence Day celebrations. The convicts were selected for release on the basis of their behaviour and other grounds. They will be released at a special function. — Special Correspondent

State-level karate championship

MYSORE: A State-level karate championship will be held during this year's Dasara celebrations and a preliminary meeting will be held in this regard on Wednesday. BIDAR: Agriculture Minister and district in-charge Bandeppa Kashempur will inaugurate Independence Day celebrations by hoisting the National Flag on Tuesday at the Nehru stadium here. Narsing Hulla Suryavanshi, MP, and MLCs Basavaraj Patil Humnabad, Rathna Kushnoor, Quazi Arshad Ali, Mukhyamantri Chandru, S.G. Namoshi, Manohar Maski, MLAs Mirajuddin Patel, Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, Prakash Khandre, Rajendra Verma, Mallikarjun S. Seminar on agro-based industries

BIDAR: Industries Minister Katta Subramaniam Naidu will inaugurate a State-level seminar on technology upgradation of agro-based industries, here on Wednesday. Agriculture Minister and district in-charge Bandeppa Kashempur, Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association president Harish Hegde, joint secretary S.S. Biradar and others will participate. Representatives of the Small Scale Industries Association (SSIA) of Bidar and others will interact with officials.

Officer gets award

BIDAR: Deputy Commandant of the Home Guards D.K. Kulkarni, Bidar, has been conferred the President's Home Guards and Civil Defence Medal for meritorious service on the occasion of Independence Day. He is the only Home Guards officer in Hyderabad Karnataka to be awarded the medal. Mr. Kulkarni has served the Home Guards for 32 years in various capacities. He has successfully led many relief and rescue operations. The Commandant Squadron Leader M. Naimuddin, officers and staff have congratulated the officer. — Staff Correspondent
