Thanjavur: The aim of the Government is to increase the 17,000-strong fleet of State transport corporations to 20,000 in three years, Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said here on Sunday. Addressing a function to introduce five new bus routes from Thanjavur, he said after the new Government took charge, 45 new routes were introduced. A new bus from Kumbakonam to Thirupur would be introduced shortly. He said the bus fare in State had been kept low at 28 paise per km despite the three-fold increase in diesel price. It had been estimated that there was need for 1,000 Grade One brake inspectors for the RTOs and the posts would be filled soon. State Cooperation Minister Ko.Si.Mani inaugurated the bus services. These are from Thanjavur to Coimbatore via Tiruchy, Karur and Kangeyam; Thanjavur to Tirupur via Tiruchy, Karur and Kangeyam; Thanjavur to Orathanadu via Marunkulam; Tiruchy to Poolambadi via Perambalur and Veppanthattai; and Pattukottai to Karambakudi via Thoppanayagam.
