A PILE OF EVASION: Tax-evaded readymade garments seized by sales tax officials from the Kollam railway station on Monday.
KOLLAM: Sales tax officials said here on Monday that tax-evaded goods, valued at more than Rs.5 crore, had been seized from the Kollam railway station complex during a vigil maintained since Friday. Sales tax assistant commissioner Ajay Ghosh said a good portion of the seized goods was meant for Onam sales. The goods included readymade garments, electronic and electrical gadgets and a load of rosewood timber. Mr. Ghosh said the bulk of the seized consignment had come addressed in fictitious names to bogus addresses. He said that there were brokers to take them to the right person. This was causing a huge loss to the State exchequer. On seizure, some persons arrived to claim a portion of the goods by paying penalty. Mr. Ghosh said Rs. 4.5 lakh had been collected as penalty and the goods were released. If goods were not claimed, they would be auctioned. He said a huge quantity of readymade garments and DVDs have been seized from the railway station during the past four days. The DVDs were bought from Delhi and the readymade garments from Kolkata. The rosewood consignment was also from West Bengal, and it was valued at Rs. 2.5 lakhs. Timber was a notified item by the Sales Tax Department and the consignment seized did not have permit or delivery note.
