Kodiyeri should quit: BJP

KOCHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded the resignation of Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in connection with the alleged custodial deaths and police torture in the State. Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, State president of the party P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said that the Government should conduct a judicial inquiry into the 14 deaths that occurred due to alleged police excesses after the LDF came to power. — Staff Reporter

Governor issues orders on SHRC chief

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Governor has issued orders appointing former Chief Justice of Jharkand High Court, Justice N. Dinakar as the chairman of the State Human Rights Commission. This follows a clarification by the State Government that objections raised against the appointment by the Leader of the Opposition were not sustainable. — Special Correspondent

PSC annual report submitted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Public Service Commission's annual report for 2005-06 was presented to Governor R.L. Bhatia here on Monday. It was submitted by a delegation led by PSC Chairman M. Gangadhara Kurup, and consisting of V. Ayesha Beevi, N. Ananthakrishnan, E. Marydasan and P.C. Kesavankutty Nair, members. - Special Correspondent

Salary from August 28

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government will disburse salary for this month between August 28 and 30 on account of Onam. It will benefit Government employees, contingent employees and the employees of aided schools, colleges and polytechnics. The bills should be submitted in the treasuries three days before disbursal. The pension for September will be disbursed from August 31. — Special Correspondent

Agriculture pension

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has released Rs.27.02 crore for the payment of agricultural workers' pension arrears from May to August 2005. The Labour Commissioner has been empowered to withdraw the money and disburse it. The arrears from September will be distributed in monthly instalments depending on availability of funds. — Special Correspondent

Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham Trust case

KOCHI: The next sitting of the authority headed by former Supreme Court Judge K.S.Paripoornan, appointed by the Supreme Court of India in the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham Trust case, will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m., at the Court Hall No. 2, in the old High Court Building. The final order in the case will be pronounced on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Krishna Pillai birth centenary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Communist Party of India State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan has called upon cadres to celebrate the birth centenary of P. Krishna Pillai, founder-leader of the Communist Party in the State, on Saturday with various programmes. BSNL's offer

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BSNL Kerala is offering extra talk time for Prepaid connections and free activation charge and free talk time for new postpaid connections in connection with Onam. The offer period is valid for one month from August 17 to September 16. For Prepaid connections, full talk value for RCC 500 and RCC 1000 and 25 per cent extra talk value for RCC 2000, RCC 3000 and RCC 5000 are being offered. In the case of new Postpaid connections free activation charge and free talk time right from the date of activation are being offered during the offer period in the following plans: Plan 225 Rs.25 per month, Plan 325 Rs.75/- per month and Plan 525 Rs.175/- per month. — Staff Reporter

Bhagawatha sapthaha yajnam

KOLLAM: The Srimad Bhagawatha sapthaha yajnam organised by the Kottarkulam Sri Mahaganapathy Temple here will be inaugurated on August 20. Swamy Asheshananda from the Palakkad Chinmaya Mission will be the `acharya' for the yajnam, which will go on till August 27. — Staff Reporter
