ALAPPUZHA: Governor R.L. Bhatia will inaugurate the year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Chettikulangara High and Training School on August 17. Organising committee general convener K.P. Sukumara Pillai and chairman A. Mahendran said here on Monday that Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran would preside over the inaugural function. C.S. Sujata, MP, and M. Murali, MLA, would offer felicitations on the occasion. Mr. Pillai said a multi-storied building would be constructed as a part of the platinum jubilee celebrations in memory of the founder of the school, A.N.P. Nair. He said an academic and curriculum committee had been formed to improve the teaching standards of the school. He said the school was founded by the late Mr. Nair in 1931 with the aim of giving quality education at low cost in the Onattukara region, which was then educationally backward. The school was upgraded as a `Malayalam High School' in 1937 and in 1947, it was made an `English High School.' Mr. Pillai said the school had been a centre of cultural activities in Onattukara. The Vidyalaya Poshini magazine published from the school had been very popular. The school was the venue of several experiments in the theatre, Kathakali and Ottan Thulall, said Mr. Pillai. He said the management of the school and the people in the area were now trying to upgrade the school as a higher secondary school.
