SP issued summons for `derogatory remarks'

GUNTUR: The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Guntur, on Monday issued summons to Guntur Superintendent of Police (Administration) S. Ranga Reddy to appear before the court on September 4 after taking on file a defamation petition filed by Guntur Bar Association.

Lawyers all over Andhra Pradesh, meanwhile, abstained from attending the courts on Monday following a call given by Guntur Bar Association in protest against the alleged derogatory remarks made by Mr. Reddy against lawyers.

The bar association president Chukkapalli Ramesh said that except for the High Court Bar Association and Rajahmundry Bar Association, lawyers at all other courts abstained from work.

There was confusion among some lawyers as the State Bar Council had given a call on Sunday to protest against the issue by wearing black badges to courts on Monday.

The Calendar Case No. 3/2006, would be tried following complaint under Section 500 of IPC, he added.

Meanwhile, the Guntur Bar Association at its meeting here on Monday decided to float Federation of State Bar Associations, saying that the State Bar Council and existing State Bar Federation were unable to address the problems of lawyers effectively. "A preparatory meeting will be organised at Guntur soon and representatives of all district bar associations will be invited to the meeting by finalising a mutually convenient date," Mr. Ramesh observed.
