BHOPAL: Torrential rain on Sunday night claimed over 11 lives and disrupted normal life here and in other parts of Madhya Pradesh. The toll is likely to rise further. According to the weather office, 30 cm of rainfall was recorded in less than 24 hours with the water level in the Upper Lake as well as the Lower Lake rising sharply. All the gates of the Bhadbhada dam on the Upper Lake were opened and even the Lower Lake was overflowing at Pul Pukhta in the old city. The city recorded the highest rainfall in 33 years. In 1973, it had recorded 28 cm of rain in 24 hours Troops were called out by the district administration here on Monday morning to help in rescue and relief operations. Five girls were crushed to death in Bairagarh township when the wall of an educational institute came crashing on their makeshift house built along this wall. Sunday night's cloudburst flooded several low-lying and congested localities rendering many people homeless. Bhopal's rail-link and even road connection with Indore, Vidisha, Hoshangabad and Sagar remained disrupted on Monday. Roads in the posh new Bhopal localities were flooded as well. Excessive flooding was not only due to heavy rainfall but also as a result of faulty drainage system.. Schools were forced to close on Monday while attendance remained very low in colleges and Government offices. Rail traffic was also affected with many South-bound trains running late. The trains on the Delhi-Bhopal section were also running late by several hours.
