The first season after new experiment

  • Department has introduced 10 lakh tiger prawn fingerlings into the sea
  • Prawns are the most valuable catch for Dakshina Kannada fishermen

MANGALORE: The new fishing season will begin in Dakshina Kannada on Tuesday. The fishermen have performed the Samudra Puja, mended their boats and nets and have loaded the vessels with ice and filled the fuel tanks. They will officially sail from Tuesday night.

    First season

This will be the first season for the fishermen after the "fish ranching" experiment was done. According to deputy director of fisheries department Suresh Kumar, the fishermen expect to catch tiger prawns this season especially in the first few months.

The department has introduced nearly 10 lakh tiger prawn fingerlings into the sea before the monsoon began in June under the "fish ranching" model.

The fishermen will also be going into the sea with additional 20,000 kl of subsidised diesel, released by the State Government for the use in fishing vessels.

    Prawn varieties

The varieties of prawns are still the most valuable for the fishermen in Dakshina Kannada. Last season they had a catch of 7,000 tonnes of different types of prawns worth a record Rs. 115 crore
