Stand united to face challenges: Barnala

Call to eliminate the scourge of terrorism "Religious tolerance, patience and perseverance have guided us in difficult times before"

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and leaders of different political parties have appealed to the people, on the eve of the Independence Day, to stand united and face the challenges before the country.

Mr. Barnala said: "Today terrorism hits out at innocent people who have offended none. The scourge ... has to be eliminated. Religious tolerance, patience and perseverance have guided us in difficult times before. It is this unity that has won us our freedom. Let us resolve to uphold the spirit of oneness and steer our nation to greater heights."

He appealed to the people to recall, with respect and reverence, the sacrifice of the freedom fighters.

Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali called upon the people irrespective of caste, creed or religion to fight the forces of communalism and terrorism which, he said, threatened communal harmony and national unity.

Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss urged the people to rededicate themselves to the cause of achieving "food for all and health for all" so that the goals of freedom were attained.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N. Varadarajan said though the country made progress in many areas, a large number of people had to be relieved of their sufferings. People should not forget that both minority communalism and majority communalism posed a threat to progress.

Communist Party of India secretary D. Pandian appealed to the people to rededicate themselves to the cause of preserving peace and harmony by defeating terrorism, which was the mortal enemy of the human race.

President of the Tamil Maanila Muslim League president S. Sheik Dawood called upon the people to contribute to make the country self-sufficient, besides striving for upholding communal harmony.
