CHENNAI : The Students Federation of India held protests in the city on Monday against the sale of cola drinks in the State.

SFI members demanded that the State Government and other institutions, including universities, ban cola drinks and that film stars refrain from endorsing the brands.

The protest was timed to precede Independence Day celebrations since the cola brands represented a new form of colonialism, said G. Selva, general secretary of the SFI, Tamil Nadu. Protests were held at 16 centres across the state, he said.

Ten students were arrested and released in the evening at Coimbatore.

The SFI has also urged students to stop drinking Coca Cola and Pepsi.

The Tamil Nadu unit would take steps to stop the sale of cola drinks at outlets within educational institutions if the demands were not met, Mr. Selva said. Some of the young protesters consumed tender coconut water as a symbolic gesture.
