CHENNAI: School students showed glimpses of their scientific temper at an inter-school exhibition organised recently by Sri Sankara Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Pammal. The school, which is among the 300-odd institutions in Chennai region partnering The Hindu-Newspaper In Education (NIE) initiative, organised `Science Fest 2006' for participants from 10 city schools. Science projects, an elocution contest and an environmental quiz were the highlights of the programme organised by the Science Centre and the Eco Club of the school. School secretary R. Gopalan inaugurated the event. Aruna Dathathreyan, senior scientist, Central Leather Research Institute, presided over the valedictory session and distributed prizes. C. Shanmugham and M. Ravikumar, members of the Federation of Science Clubs of Tamil Nadu and S. Gomathi, member, Tamilnadu Science Forum judged the exhibits and hosted the quiz. Schools partnering with NIE get to select the module they want their students to gain exposure to. The 45-minute NIE workshops are held once a month for six months. Modules on `Know your newspaper' and `Sustained select reading' are also part of the learning experience. Objectives of The Hindu NIE Programme * Assist schools strengthen instruction through the newspaper medium * Empower students to build knowledge on various subjects * Teach children to think for themselves * Develop a daily reading habit
