Capital continues to face long hours of power cuts

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Four to 10 hours of power cuts remained the norm in most colonies of the Capital on Monday as the distribution companies yet again failed to supply adequate power to the residents despite the peak demand dropping to 3,175 MW.

The peak load-shedding during the day was around 600 MW because of which the distribution companies were forced to resort to rotational load-shedding. Residents complained of frequent power cuts of about two hours each adding up to nearly eight hours in most colonies in South Delhi and East Delhi. Sources on the other hand blamed Delhi Transco Limited for the crisis. They said the supply of power was poor and matters were made worse by technical snags in the Badarpur-Ballabgarh and Badarpur-Ghazipur transmission lines of DTL because of which power supply to East and South Delhi was disrupted.

The availability of power in the Capital was primarily affected by the closure of a number of power plants. While the Nathpa Jhakri plant from which Delhi draws about 350 MW of power has been closed due to high silt level, the floods in Gujarat have caused a disruption in the supply of gas to several power plants leading to closure of the Gas Turbine which produces 94 MW of power, STG which produces 34 MW, Pragati that produces 330 MW and Auriya Gas that produces 122 MW of power for Delhi.

With Delhi's own production being just about 750 MW as against the installed capacity of 1,700 MW, the Capital experienced another days of cuts as the power being procured from the Grid was simply not enough to fuel its needs.
