Schools in Mangalore had the most striking celebrations

ENTHUSIASTIC: Students showing interest in Independence Day celebrations in Mangalore on Tuesday even as a youth sports the national tricolour on his face.

MANGALORE: Independence Day celebrations signify different things to different people. A drive around Mangalore in the morning provided different glimpses of Independence Day.

The most attractive celebrations happened in schools where children neatly dressed in uniform arrived at their respective schools and gave their salute to the national flag.

They also carried a small flag everywhere. Some of them stuck it to their school vans or to the vehicles of their parents or their own bicycles.

The schools this year had taken extra care to ensure that the children did not stand in the sun for too long.

hey had requested the chief guests to arrive in time for the flag hoisting ceremony. In most schools the entire ceremony was over in less than 30 minutes.

As for the college students it was a welcome holiday. After a brief ceremony at their colleges they thronged the local malls for window-shopping. Some others led a convoy of two-wheelers, each one of them sporting a tricolour as they waved and wished each other "Happy Independence day".

Each corner in the city had a place for the national flag. Every rickshaw stand, and bus stand had hoisted the national flag and distributed sweets.

800 boats

With the fishing fleet of nearly 800 boats set to begin a new season on Tuesday, each vessel sported a tricolour before they sailed into the sea.

Some of the city buses had been decorated for the occasion.

Even the swanky places in the city had their own style for the celebrations. Taj Manjarun had announced a 25 per cent discount on their buffet lunch for senior citizens. The special buffet featured a dish from each region.
