Tyagis' contributions highlight of programmes

VIJAYAWADA: Evoking images of leaders who fought for freedom of the nation and laid down their lives to enable their next generations to breathe in free air, students of Nirmala High School presented a spectacular cultural show to mark the 60th Independence Day celebrations on their school campus on Tuesday.

A dance number choreographed on a song from Telugu film Major Chandrakanth - `Punyabhoomi naa desam namo namaami... ' - was easily the favourite of the audience.

Gaiety marked the day in Akshara International School, where hotelier Dhanekula Ravindranadh Tagore unfurled the tricolour.

Addressing the students, he said they should emulate freedom fighters, who made great sacrifices to set the nation free from the clutches of the British. School principal Sarada Anil Kumar also addressed the students. Principal of Andhra Pradesh Residential School for Minority Girls at Vidyadharapuram K. P. Babu hoisted the national flag and received guard of honour.

Later, students enthralled the audience with a cultural show in the auditorium.

`Update knowledge'

District Employment Officer Hanuman Naik, in his I-Day speech at Nalanda Degree College, urged students to update their knowledge to keep pace with the changing times. He said they should also rise to the needs of the society by grooming themselves into ideal citizens. Principal P.C.S Reddy, executive officer of Nalanda Educational Institutions V. Srinivasulu and others were present.

Later, NSS volunteers who donated blood on the occasion were given certificates and prizes were given to outstanding students.
