33 life convicts taste freedom

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The 60th Independence Day on Tuesday brought freedom from imprisonment for 33 life convicts in the high security Gulbarga Central Prison.

They were pardoned and released in recognition of their best conduct in jail.

For many like Sachinrao of Bangalore, who was undergoing rigorous life imprisonment for the crime committed 10 years ago, it was a dream come true.

But there was disappointment for Gurudeep Singh of Amritsar in Punjab, who was convicted in the bomb blast case in Bidar district and a few other similar offences in New Delhi and Manohar of Bhalki in Bidar district because the Government changed its decision in the last minute.

Thanks to the initiative taken by the Jail Superintendent Lakshminarayan, freedom became more sweeter with the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and Minorities Development Corporations, and Backward Class Development Corporations offering them subsidised loans under different schemes to make a fresh beginning.
