LITTLE MASTER: Water Resources Minister K.S. Eshwarappa with Ramu Hanchinal (a dwarf man in sports suit) before felicitating him in Bijapur on Tuesday. The 30-year-old from Basavanabagewadi won a silver medal in an international sports event held fo r dwarfs in Belfast recently.
BIJAPUR: Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa said here on Tuesday that the State Government was keen to find permanent solution to floods along the Krishna and its tributaries. The Minister, who is the Bijapur district in-charge, was addressing a gathering after hoisting the National Flag at the district stadium to mark the Independence Day celebrations. He said the low-lying riverside villages would be rehabilitated in safe and convenient places. In Bijapur, work on shifting flood-prone Dasur, Takli and Tarapur villages was under way. Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd., which had been entrusted the responsibility of rehabilitating the people of Tarapur village, had acquired a 20-acre plot where a layout would be formed, he added.
Crops destroyed
Voicing concern over destruction of crops and properties as well as loss of life in floods, he said 67 villages along the Bhima and the Krishna had been affected in the district. Standing crops on 6,686 hectares of land had been lost and several houses had collapsed. The crop loss was put at Rs. 28 crore. The Government had released Rs. 2 crore and whatever extra money required for relief would be released soon. He said Maharashtra should regulate release of water from its reservoirs in a more scientific way. About the Government's commitment to implement Indi (Guttibasavanna) Lift Irrigation Scheme, he said the survey work was under way. Once this was done, work at field level would start. Mr. Eshwarappa said 40 small check-dams would be built in the district at the cost of Rs. 2 crore and action plan was at the approval stage. Mr. Eshwarappa honoured Ramu Hanchanal from Basavanabagewadi, who won a silver medal in an international athletic championship held for dwarfs in Belfast recently, and a few other achievers and freedom fighters on the occasion. Bijapur MP Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, MLAs M.B. Patil and Appasaheb Pattanashetti, zilla panchayat president Arjun Rathod, municipal president Abdul Loni, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin, Superintendent of Police Seemanthkumar Singh, and zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Rajeev Ranjan participated. Mr. Eshwarappa later visited flood-affected Tarapur, Tavarkhed and Devanagaon villages in Sindagi taluk. Besides making complaints of poor relief, the affected people especially those from Devanagaon, demanded that they be rehabilitated in a safe place. The Minister participated in a function held at Central Jail here to mark the release of 21 convicts.
