Schoolchildren steal the show

Over 3,000 children had the audience spell bound with their performance

GULBARGA: Schoolchildren with their impressive show of mass dance and drill programmes hogged the limelight at the impressive Independence Day celebrations and the ceremonial parade by the police and para military forces and the Seva Dal volunteers at the Chandrasekhar Patil Stadium here on Tuesday.

After unfurling the National Flag by Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Dharshanapur, who is the district in-charge, in the presence of large number of dignitaries, including Sunil Valyapur, Chandrasekhar Patil Revoor, Shashil G. Namoshi, Inspector-General of Police R.K. Datta, Superintendent of Police Manish Karbhikar, and Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey, the children from different schools had the packed stadium spell bound by their performance. Over 3,000 schoolchildren in eight groups kept the audience and the VVIPS glued to their seat, despite sweltering conditions. The performance started with a mass drill by 2,000 children drawn from different school and this was followed by an impressive performance of a folk dance, "Patta Kunitha", accompanied by the music of traditional drums by smartly dressed children from the Maharishi Vidyamandir. The performance by the girls of the Government Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe School in the city to the folk tunes of the famous song "Baraya Beladingale" drew wide applause from the audience. Children from the Sharanabasaveshwara Public School in the city were the cynosure of all eyes with their eye-catching performance of the hit number "Rangeela Mera Hindustan" from the Hindi film "Fanaa".
