LISTING PRIORITIES: Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur addressing the gathering at the Independence Day function in Gulbarga on Tuesday.
GULBARGA: Agriculture Marketing Minister Mr Sharanabasappa Darshanapur said on Tuesday that the long-pending Gandorinala Medium Irrigation Project in the district would be dedicated to the nation in October this year. He was unfurling the National Flag at the 60th Independence Day celebrations at the Chandrasekhar Patil Stadium here. The Minister said the priority of the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government was to complete all lingering irrigation projects in the State. This year, the Government had allocated funds to complete 39 major and medium irrigation projects in the State. Of these, the Bennethora Major Irrigation Project in Gulbarga district was inaugurated last month by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. The other 38 projects would be dedicated to the nation at the earliest.
Canal work
Mr. Darshanapur said the Government had also accorded priority to modernise the canal and distributory networks in the irrigation projects, which had already been completed. The Government proposed to take up the modernisation project in the canals of the Upper Krishna Project to ensure optimum utilisation of water and ensure that the water released in the canals and distributaries reached the tail end farmers. The allocation for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj institutions had been increased by 50 per cent and the allocation for agriculture had been doubled. To improve the education facilities in rural areas, the Government had sanctioned 716 new primary schools and another 314 primary schools had been upgraded, 385 new high schools and 130 junior colleges and 14 first grade colleges had been established this year. Apart from this, 104 Industrial Training Institutes had been upgraded. The Government proposed to open 2,463 new rural libraries this year, he added.
New court complex
About the development activities in Gulbarga district, the Minister said work on building a new court complex at a cost of Rs. 70 crore to house the circuit bench of the High Court had begun. The foundation stone for the proposed 1,000-bed hospital in the city would be laid this month. Later, the Minister honoured freedom fighters and personalities from different sections of society. Among those who were honoured were freedom fighters Annarao Patil, Madivalayya Mutt, Sharanappa Faijalapur, Dharmaveer Gampa, and Basavannappa Munnoli. Seshamurthy Awadani, Staff Correspondent of "Kannada Prabha", Dinish Shukla, Reporter of "Samyukta Karnataka", Bhavani Singh Takur, Dattu Agarwal (Education), Supriya Srinivasrao (Science and Technology), Roopa Basavaraj (Education), Priyadharshini Chandrakant (Education), Priya (Education), Girija S. Bijaspur (Education), Krishna S. Patil and Namita N. Sangvikar (both NCC) were honoured. The Minister distributed tricycles to the disabled persons as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
