FIEM's R&D centre in Japan

Special Correspondent

Has technical support pact with Ichikoh

NEW DELHI: FIEM Industries, a leading manufacturer of automotive lighting and signalling equipment and rear view mirrors, is setting up an R&D centre in Japan for better understanding and closer coordination with Japanese manufacturers for producing the automotive equipment.

Meanwhile, it is implementing its expansion plan, envisaging another unit at Hosur in Tamil Nadu and a unit in Himachal Pradesh. At present it has four manufacturing units — one each in Haryana and Karnataka and two in Tamil Nadu.

The new facility at Hosur will be a 100 per cent Export Oriented Unit (EOU) and the equipment manufactured here will be exported to Piaggio, Italy, Aspock Holding GmbH, Austria, and Ichikoh Industries Limited, Japan. Trial runs were being carried out at this unit, J. K. Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of FIEM Industries, said here last week.

Mr. Jain said the company, which supplied lighting and related equipment, including various types of mirrors, to auto manufacturers in India as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer), had already entered into a technical support agreement with Ichikoh. It had also entered into a joint venture agreement with Korea Air Conditioners Co. Ltd., South Korea, for manufacturing automotive radiators, heating elements and air conditioning plants. The investments in the R&D centre in Japan and testing labs in India and Japan will help the company keep abreast of its Japanese and other global customers and strengthen its design capacities.

Mr. Jain said the company planned to make an investment of Rs. 74 crore on expansion and enlarging the portfolio of its product range. The investments will be met through an IPO, debt and internal accruals.
